Qualified tree surgeons with more than 20 years experience

Scotton Tree Care was established in 2004 by Ian Lythe and Kevin Davison. We trained at Askham Bryan College, completing a three-year National Diploma in Urban Forestry before gaining further practical experience with established tree work companies.

That combination of formal training and hands-on experience means we can assess the condition, surroundings, and requirements of each tree before recommending the appropriate work.

Our tree surgery services

Deadwood removal

Removing dead, dying, or unsafe branches can reduce the risk of falling timber and improve the overall appearance of a tree.

Crown reduction

Carefully reducing the overall size of a tree can help manage its spread while retaining a natural shape.

Crown thinning

Selective branch removal can reduce density and allow more light and air through the canopy without unnecessarily reducing the tree’s overall size.

Crown lifting

Removing lower branches to increase clearance over paths, driveways, roads, buildings and gardens.

Sectional tree felling

Where a tree cannot safely be felled in one piece, it can be dismantled in sections using appropriate equipment and controlled techniques.

Tree dismantling

For trees in restricted locations, dismantling allows sections to be carefully removed while reducing the risk to buildings, vehicles, gardens and surrounding property.

Does my tree need pruning or removal?

Not every problem requires a tree to be removed; signs that you may need professional tree advice include:

  • Dead or broken branches
  • Large branches overhanging buildings
  • Excessive growth towards buildings or roads
  • Branches interfering with power lines
  • Trees blocking light
  • Significant decay or damage
  • Storm damage
  • Roots affecting surrounding areas
  • Trees becoming too large for their location
  • Concerns about tree stability

The best solution depends on the individual tree, its condition, and its surroundings. That’s why we inspect the tree before recommending work.

Do I need permission to prune or remove a tree?

Some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), while additional controls can apply to trees within Conservation Areas.

Before work begins, we check with the relevant local authority. If an application or notification is required, we can handle the paperwork for you.

What Is a Tree Preservation Order?

A TPO can protect individual trees, groups of trees, or woodland where the authority considers their protection important.

What About Conservation Areas?

Trees in Conservation Areas can have additional protection, so homeowners shouldn’t assume that routine pruning or removal is automatically permitted.

We’ll check the situation before carrying out work, so you don’t have to navigate the process yourself.

How our tree surgery service works

1. Get in touch

Tell us what you’re concerned about and where the tree is located.

2. Initial site visit

We visit the property to inspect the tree and discuss what you want to achieve.

3. Straightforward advice

We’ll explain what work we believe is appropriate and discuss any relevant permissions.

4. Clear quotation

You’ll know what work is proposed and the cost before we start.

5. Professional tree work

Our experienced team carries out the agreed work safely and efficiently.

6. Complete clear-up

We leave the work area tidy and deal with the resulting tree waste appropriately.

Tree work can involve chainsaws, climbing, rigging, falling branches, and working close to buildings, vehicles, and other people.

An experienced tree surgeon can assess the risks, select appropriate techniques and carry out the work with the right equipment.

For homeowners, the choice isn’t simply about finding someone who can cut a branch. It’s about finding someone who understands tree health, safe working practices, appropriate pruning techniques, and the surroundings in which the tree stands.
